My work at the lab got extremely late that day, I was exhausted and knew I'd go to sleep once my head hit the pillow but to get to my pillow I had to get home.
I wrapped up, cleaned my station, and left. My eyes were drooping but I had to stay fresh since I still had to drive another 10 km.
Will probably reach much earlier since the road would be empty.
It had been a while since I was out at this time, the roads looked too empty. But I didn't let it bother me and continued driving. The sleep was spreading through my veins rapidly. I blasted the music which snapped me back but only for a minute. Suddenly before I could get a grip, my car swerved to the right, and I caught a glimpse of a lady on the sidewalk.
She was draped in red adorned in gold. Why was somebody dressed like a bride standing on the street in the middle of the night? No that wasn't important! I was going to crash if I couldn't get my car back in control. I held the steering tighter, pushed my left leg on the clutch, and right in the break and the car stopped. Now I was wide awake. I looked for the woman, but she wasn't there, only her footprints. Fear crept in and so did my flight and fright response.
Without looking back, I drove back home, with no hint of sleep.
The next day first thing, I got my car alignment checked which was fine.
So, whatever happened last night was not a car defect nor did I do it...I think. Confused I drove to work and spotted the place where it happened. I stopped my car to the side, realizing what might have happened. If I had slept at the wheel, I would have rammed right into the divider which would damage my car, deployed the airbag into my face and no one would have been there since there was no CCTV camera or traffic police there.
Whatever made my car turn, saved my life. Maybe it was a who. I went to the exact spot where the lady had stood but nothing. The vendor lady sitting next to the road looked at my confused face.
"What happened, kid?" She asked. And I just looked at her blank. No idea how to express what I wanted to. "A lady, red saree, jewels," I said trying to convert my visuals to words. She smiled "Devi ma, saved you didn't she," I looked at her quizzically.
She got up and told me to follow her. 5 minutes into the small cut, she took me into a hut and there she was! The woman I saw but it was a picture of her, covered with flowers.
Dawning on me I looked at the woman in awe and she smiled back knowingly. I folded my hands and bowed to the woman who saved my life.
