Shivika woke up at seven in the morning with a shriek. Her heart raced from yet another dream. Relief set into her drowsy eyes as she wiped the sweat off of her face and sat up, her chest thumping madly. She could sense a gnawing blackness that seemed to have found its way into her bones, into the pit of her stomach, making her weaker by the hour. She pushed past her racing mind, made herself a cup of coffee with trembling hands, turned her mobile phone on, and threw it on the couch in the living room. She opened the balcony door of her apartment and stealthily scanned the road through the small crack. Her eyes moved in precise angles like a calculating machine that was activated by large amounts of adrenaline pouring into her brain owing to all that had gone down in recent days. The light from the crack sharply divided the darkness of the living room in two.

Chaos was all over the road. A state of sudden rattling change had found its way into the nation. It looked like the mayhem that had caught her, and moved her bright little world into blackness, had exploded onto the streets. She scanned the face of every man and woman she could see and most seemed to be drenched in defeat. Defeat on the faces of mothers who did not know how to feed their children.
