BOOK REVIEW | BORNE BY VARUNA | J.U. MENON

Ever wondered what would happen if a princess, instead of waiting for a prince, took charge of her own destiny and fought for the throne herself? Borne by Varuna is exactly that story—a powerful and inspiring tale set in a world of ancient kingdoms, fierce battles, and mythical creatures. But what really sets this book apart is the heroine, Chitra, who challenges the age-old traditions and shows us that courage and determination can rewrite destiny.

At the heart of the story is Rajkumari Chitra, the eldest princess of Jālaka, who’s expected to provide an heir to the kingdom. But Chitra has bigger dreams—she wants the throne. When a prophecy leads to her banishment, she refuses to accept her fate. Along with her loyal companion, Saubha, she disguises herself as a boy and joins a gurukul to master warfare and leadership. But things take a dark turn when their guru is brutally murdered. Now, with a diverse group of allies, Chitra must take on the enemies of Dvipura and prove her worth to her people. It’s an intense ride, filled with epic battles, magical creatures, and, of course, the fight for justice and self-worth.

J.U. Menon, a scientist turned author, brings a unique voice to Indian mythology through Borne by Varuna. Her love for mythology and her background in science blend perfectly in this gripping narrative. Fans of The Hunger Games or The Immortals of Meluha will feel right at home in this thrilling, mythological adventure.

What makes this book stand out is the refreshing take on gender roles. Chitra’s struggle to claim her rightful place in a male-dominated world feels both timeless and incredibly relevant. Menon weaves mythology with a modern message about challenging traditions and breaking barriers, making it more than just a fantasy tale. Plus, the detailed portrayal of Indian warfare, ancient creatures, and the gurukul system adds depth and authenticity.

Chitra is a heroine you can’t help but root for—her journey from banishment to battle is full of moments where you cheer her on. Her resilience and determination feel incredibly relatable, especially in a world where societal expectations often limit individual dreams. The themes of self-discovery, courage, and breaking tradition are ones we’ve all faced in some way.

One of the most emotional moments in the book is when Chitra learns of her guru’s assassination. Her grief is palpable, but it’s her decision to rally her fellow students and fight back that really hits home. It’s a turning point that highlights not only her strength but the deep bonds she’s formed with those around her.

Borne by Varuna shines in its pacing and world-building. The story is engaging from start to finish, with each chapter offering new twists and challenges for Chitra. However, the use of ancient names and mythological terms might be a bit challenging for readers unfamiliar with Indian mythology. But, honestly, that’s part of the book’s charm—it immerses you in a richly detailed world.

This book left me deeply inspired. Chitra’s journey is a powerful reminder that we all have the ability to challenge the status quo and forge our own paths. Her determination to overcome societal limitations and claim her rightful place speaks volumes about courage and self-belief. It’s a message that resonates far beyond the pages of the story, urging us to redefine what’s possible in our own lives.
