BOOK REVIEW | HEY KITTY | SHILPA SURAJ

Remember those fairytales with evil stepsisters and a happily-ever-after? Well, Hey Kitty by Shilpa Suraj flips that upside down. No magic wands or fairy godmothers here—just high school drama, social media meltdowns, and the messy reality of being a teenager today. This story takes you on a wild ride through the complicated lives of two girls caught in a family merger they never asked for.

Shilpa Suraj, who’s given us gems in romance and women's fiction before, brings a whole new vibe with Hey Kitty. She throws you straight into the emotional whirlwind of teenage drama and growing pains with all the compassion and understanding you’d want from a YA novel.

So, Misha Banerjee’s world turns upside down when her mom marries Katya Shankar’s dad. Now, she’s got to share her space with the girl she definitely didn’t want to be around. And to make things even more awkward? Katya ends up at the same school where Misha’s the reigning queen bee. What follows is a power struggle between these two, with lots of emotional highs and lows. Katya, the quiet underdog, just wants to survive high school, while Misha is desperate to stay on top. But the battle lines keep shifting, and it’s anyone’s guess who’ll come out on top.

What makes Hey Kitty stand out is how it portrays the complexity of being a teen today—peer pressure, the fear of losing your social status, and trying to find yourself while your world changes at lightning speed.

Shilpa Suraj’s writing feels like a direct line to your high school years. It’s fast-paced, sharp, and oh-so-real. You’ll be laughing at Misha’s quick comebacks one minute and feeling Katya’s frustration the next. The dialogue is spot-on—just like something you’d overhear at a school cafeteria. And the way Suraj weaves humour with heartfelt moments? It’s so smooth, you’ll be hooked from the first page.

Her storytelling is also super visual—you can practically see the drama unfolding like a movie in your head. The writing just flows, making it easy to devour the book in one sitting.

The heart of this book is Katya and Misha. What I loved is how neither of them is what they first appear. Misha isn’t just a stereotypical mean girl; she’s vulnerable and fighting battles of her own. Katya, on the other hand, is more than the shy, quiet type. She’s determined, resilient, and knows how to stand up for herself, even when the odds aren’t in her favour.

Their journey from rivals to reluctant allies is what makes the story so relatable. You’ll see bits of yourself in both of them, whether you were the popular kid or the underdog. And that’s the beauty of it—Suraj makes you care about both girls, flaws and all.

The plot is a perfect blend of high school drama, family tensions, and unexpected twists. It keeps you on your toes with its back-and-forth power struggles between the girls. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, something shifts, making it impossible to put the book down. Plus, the pacing is just right—not too slow, but not so fast that you feel like you’re missing out on the emotional depth.

Hey Kitty touches on some big themes: identity, family, and how social media shapes us. It dives deep into the struggles of being a teenager today—feeling out of place, not fitting in, and constantly battling the pressure to be “perfect.” Suraj also shows how important communication is, whether it’s with family or friends. And the best part? She does it all without sounding preachy.

Let me tell you, this book hit all the feels. You’ll laugh, get mad, and maybe even tear up. It’s impossible not to get emotionally invested in Katya and Misha’s journey. The way they navigate their own insecurities while trying to figure out their family and social lives is so raw and real.

One of the biggest strengths of Hey Kitty is its authenticity. You can tell Suraj understands what it feels like to be a teenager today, with all the pressures and confusion that come with it. The character growth is beautifully done, and the message that we’re all more alike than we realize—especially when it comes to family—hits home.

The only tiny issue I had was a few grammatical hiccups, but honestly? It didn’t take away from the experience at all. This is one of those stories where the plot and characters are so strong, you’re willing to overlook the small stuff.

In a nutshell, Hey Kitty is a heartfelt, emotional rollercoaster that anyone who’s ever survived high school can relate to. It’s not just about teen drama; it’s about family, self-discovery, and how we grow through the chaos. Shilpa Suraj knocked it out of the park with this one, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a story that’s equal parts entertaining and thought-provoking.
