Sameer Gudhate presents the Book Review of Angel Rising: An Azshael Story by A. D. Landor

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to stand between worlds, caught in the chaos of fragile peace and looming war? Angel Rising: An Azshael Story doesn’t just let you wonder—it pulls you right into the heart of it. This is the second book in the Ambassador Azshael Series, and let me tell you, A. D. Landor knows how to up the stakes. If you’re a fan of rich fantasy worlds where Angels and Demons aren’t just enemies but uneasy allies, this book is your next obsession.

The story kicks off with a bang—literally. A young Angel from a pacifist sect is murdered, and a priceless ceremonial artifact, the White Rood, is stolen. Enter Azshael, the outcast Angel who always seems to find trouble—or maybe trouble finds him? Teaming up with Lytta, a Succae warrior with her own demons (pun intended), Azshael dives headfirst into a mystery that’s bigger than anyone expected. From the celestial towers of the White Citadel to the eerie ruins of the Succae capital, the story is a whirlwind of secrets, power plays, and enough twists to keep you guessing.

Landor’s writing feels like stepping into another world. Their descriptions are vivid but never overdone—think cinematic, not flowery. The action scenes are intense, the quieter moments hit home, and the dialogue? Sharp and memorable. There’s also this effortless balance between grand, epic storytelling and intimate, personal struggles that makes the book hard to put down.

Azshael and Lytta are the heart of this story, and honestly, I’m here for it. Azshael isn’t your typical brooding hero—he’s layered, conflicted, and refreshingly real. Lytta, on the other hand, is fierce, witty, and so much more than a sidekick. Their dynamic is one of the best parts of the book. And the themes Landor explores—power, unity, and the blurry line between right and wrong—make you think without hitting you over the head with a message.

The pacing is spot on. Just when you think you can catch your breath, Landor throws in a twist that has you flipping pages like your life depends on it. The story is intricate but never confusing, with each piece of the puzzle clicking into place in a way that’s oh-so-satisfying.

At its core, this book is about connection—between individuals, between races, and even between past and present. It also tackles the consequences of power and the importance of standing up for what’s right, even when it’s hard.

This book had me on an emotional rollercoaster. There were moments that had me cheering, others that made me tear up, and more than a few that left me clutching my imaginary pearls.

The world-building is phenomenal, the characters are unforgettable, and the plot is as gripping as they come. Plus, the tension between Azshael and Lytta? Chef’s kiss.

If I had to nitpick, some of the lore might feel overwhelming if you’re diving in without reading Book 1. A quick recap would’ve been helpful.

I absolutely loved this book. The mix of action, mystery, and character-driven storytelling hit all the right notes for me. I’m already counting the days until the next installment drops.

Angel Rising is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy with heart. Whether you’re here for the action, the characters, or the intricate world-building, this book delivers in spades. Do yourself a favor and pick it up—you won’t regret it.
